Diabetes prevention and care

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when glucose, commonly called blood sugar is too high or is poorly metabolized. The end product of every food that is consumed is glucose. The hormone called insulin which is produced by the pancreas metabolizes glucose and is further used as energy.

In diabetes, the pancreas does not secrete enough insulin for glucose metabolism, and this causes a surge in blood sugar levels which is a cause of Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes depends on factors mostly hereditary and lifestyle choices. Diabetes can be inherited from either of the parents, therefore if any one of the parents is diabetic then their children are at risk of acquiring the condition.

Obesity is a very common cause of diabetes. Obesity makes the management of diabetes tougher and also causes the condition to worsen. Obesity-related diabetes also poses a serious threat to heart health and other organs. Weight control and management must be sought and routinely followed.

Obesity arises from an inactive lifestyle; an inactive lifestyle renders all the hormones of the body out of balance. Being physically active and managing weight may reduce the risk of diabetes considerably.

Keeping a tab on sugar levels is mandatory for anyone with risk factors or for people above the age of 40. Diabetes diagnosis tests such as HBA1C, fasting blood sugar (FBS), glucose tolerance test (GTT), and random blood sugar can be done to diagnose the condition.

Taking special consideration of food consumed and changing food habits to more fiber-rich and nutritious choices is an important step to improving a diabetic patient’s health condition.
